San Francisco ranks very poorly in terms of entertainment options
for Youth under 21. Currently, San Francisco has only one full
time 18+ nightclub and the City Municipal Code only allows 18+
events to operate until 2am. For many years, the San Francisco
Police department actively discouraged the creation of new 18+
venues by placing conditions into entertainment permits
restricting even restaurants to 21+.
This has meant that San Francisco youth attend unpermitted
entertainment events, drive to other cities for permitted 18+
parties, or hang out on the streets because of the lack of other
entertainment options. In a recent survey of worldwide cities, XY
Magazine described the under 21 entertainment scene in San
Francisco as "non-existent".
Last year, the SFLNC worked with Supervisor Mark Leno to sponsor
legislation to allow 18+ events and venues to go after hours. That
legislation passed the Board of Supervisors but was vetoed by
former Mayor Willie Brown.
This year, the SFLNC's Youth Action Coordinator, DJ Liam Shy, has
been appointed to the Youth Commission and they've made it their
mission to make things better for the Youth of San Francisco. Read
the resolution by the Youth Commission to better understand the
problem and find out how the Commissioners hope to create a
solution.
After a two year legislative process, 18+ venues and events in
San Francisco may now apply to the Entertainment Commission
for an after-hours permit. The legislation to allow 18+
after-hours, co-sponsored by Supervisors Bevan Dufty, Chris
Daly and Tom Ammiano, was recently signed into law by Mayor
Newsom.
On Tuesday, March 16th, the Board of Supervisors voted 9-2 in
favor of Bevan Dufty's legislation allowing 18+ venues to
apply to the Entertainment Commission for an after-hours
permit. The legislation now goes to Mayor Gavin Newsom for
approval or a veto. Read how you can help...
