Sit/Lie Law Needed to Stop Bullies on Haight |
12/17/2009 |
There's big trouble on
Haight Street.
"It's High Noon out
here," said Arthur Evans, who has lived at the
corner of Haight and Ashbury for 35 years. "We don't
want to live in the Wild West. We need a sheriff to
come in and straighten it out."
Actually the sheriff
is already in place, San Francisco police Capt.
Teresa Barrett. She's getting good reviews from
neighbors, merchants, and residents while her
officers are on patrol, issuing citations and
confronting belligerent street people.
But it's not working.

Local Dem Leaders
Weigh in on Nightclub Issues |
06/09/09 |
|
At their May 14 meeting,
members of the Democratic County Central Committee are
expected to vote on a resolution calling for reform of
the state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control
as well as asking the city's supervisors to conduct
hearings on how much street fairs, bars and
entertainment venues must pay for city fees and
permits.
Nightlife issues have made headlines for months as the
ABC has cracked down on numerous venues, both gay and
straight, for code violations. At the same time city
and police officials have cracked down on outdoor
events for not addressing complaints about nudity,
public drunkenness, and lewd behavior, and have
grappled with how to reign in violence associated with
nightclubs and bars. |

Squeezing
the Fun Out of Festivals |
|
Justified
or not, San Francisco’s reputation as a hedonistic,
fun-loving place is derived in large part from The
City’s collection of festivals, street fairs and
parades. That only in San Francisco experience
could begin to fade away, however, due to a cascade of
ever-increasing city fees, dwindling corporate sponsorships,
and a reliance on tenuous alcohol and beverage sales ... |

Police Keep Quiet on
Clubs |
posted

There’s nothing like a few knife fights or shootings
to push San Francisco’s peace-loving public officials
into action.
That
would explain why legislation aimed at curbing ongoing
problems at city nightclubs that has been laying
dormant for weeks is going to be heard next week. |

New Weapon Needed to
Combat Nightclub Violence |
|
|
In the
early hours of Easter Sunday, just after the 2 a.m.
closing of Whisper, at 535 Florida St. in the Mission,
someone fired numerous bullets into the crowd out
front and hit five men. The victims were all in their
20s and luckily did not suffer life-threatening
injuries. Police were never even able to release a
description of the unknown shooter, who escaped and is
still at large.
Beset
by numerous legal troubles and complaints, Whisper
opted to close down May 3. Its Web site is advertising
a "last-blast reunion grand finale" — a slogan in
extremely poor taste after that April 12 mass
shooting. |

Police
will fan out to nightclubs this weekend after a recent
spike in violence outside SoMa and Mission district
hot-spots.
“In
the last three weeks, we have seen a weekend increase
in violence,” police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said. “We are
redirecting some of our violence-reduction teams to be
in the areas where we consider a potential [for
violent crime].” |

As the
Examiner first reported, Supervisor Bevan Dufty
reprimanded Police Chief Heather Fong in a letter
Monday for the Police Department’s failure to show up
at a March 23 hearing about legislation proponents say
would help The City crack down on problem nightclubs.
The clubs are being blamed for violence in the Mission
District and the North Beach and SOMA neighborhoods. |

Today is take two for a
hearing on a two-year effort to increase the
Entertainment Commission’s ability to deal with

commission more administrative power to discipline
venues. |

Bars, Pubs Growing Strong in Down Economy |
|
In these economically
sorrowful times, sorrow-drowning is serving as an
economic salve.
Bars, pubs and other purveyors of intoxicating elixirs
saw more job growth in the past year than any other
business sector — even as most other businesses in San
Francisco and San Mateo counties lost jobs.
New California
Employment Development Department annual data reveals
that the number of jobs in alcohol “drinking places”
grew from 3,000 to 3,400 in the two counties from
January 2008 to January 2009. That’s a bigger job
growth than any of the other 94 business sectors
tracked. |

Leno
Threatens Audit of ABC |

The ongoing feud between San Francisco late-night
denizens and the state agency tasked with overseeing businesses with
liquor licenses could heat up should state Senator Mark Leno (D-San
Francisco) proceed with pushing for an audit of the department. |
