Legislation by Supervisor Chris Daly created the Western SOMA Citizens Planning Task Force to advise the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission on planning for western SoMa. The last South of Market re-zoning made entertainment a non-permitted use, prohibiting new places of entertainment in the SOMA area, except those in existence prior to 1992. It is a priority of the SFLNC to re-classify entertainment to a permitted use in the SOMA district.
SOMA: Can business, play and housing co-exist?
Please read below and attend two important meetings about the re-zoning processs of the South of Market Area, a project that is very important to the future of the entertainment industry in SOMA and San Francisco. Owner of West Side Club Is Acquitted of Drug-Den Charges
In a surprising upset for federal prosecutors, the owner of the Sound Factory, once one of Manhattan's hottest nightclubs, was acquitted by a jury yesterday on charges that he turned the club into a den for rampant drug use and sales. Hey supporters of San Francisco Nightlife, Mark your calendars!
The San Francisco Late Night Coalition needs you to come to a party. Now what could be more fun that that? Read on....
The San Francisco Late Night Coalition is hosting a fundraiser that truly befits our status as THE political advocacy group for San Francisco's diverse arts and entertainment communities.
In conjunction with the iconoclastic START SOMA art gallery - the folks who repeatedly shook up San Francisco's tired art scene this past year, the SFLNC has created ART 415, a celebration of SF nightlife. This event brings together pretty much EVERYTHING that San Francisco has to offer in terms of late night entertainment. Art. Music. Fashion. Dance. Independent Film. Multimedia. Technology. All in the name of community + political activism.

For that reason, the Entertainment Commission has agreed to act as the lead agency for SFIAF

Imagine a city where exciting nightspots are always opening around the corner, clubs and bars harmoniously coexist with their residential neighbors and the liquor pours freely until well after 2am. It could be San Francisco, if the Entertainment Commission has anything to say about it. “San Francisco can become a destination city again,” says Terrance Alan, president of the commission. “We just need to start shouting, ‘Come here! Come here!’” more...

The SFLNC would like to alert everyone about a public hearing on legislation proposed by Supervisor Fiona Ma that would ban signs, flyers or posters attached to City utility poles. This legislation would limit the ability of many communities to post information about concerts, dance clubs, public gatherings, missing pets, political candidates, protests etc. The legislation would restrict such notices to neighborhood kiosks or other designated areas.
Supervisor Ma's Sign Ordinance will be heard in the Board of Supervisors' Land Use Committee on Monday, September 22 at 1:00pm in City Hall, Room 263.
Legislation To Ban Signs on Utility Poles Tabled at Committee
The ordinance proposed by Supervisor Fiona Ma to ban Signs from City utility poles was tabled at the Land Use Commitee of the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 22nd. After testimony heavily against the legislation, Supervisor Ma said that she would meet with groups to attempt to develop a compromise. The legislation was tabled at the call of Chair Jake McGoldrick, who did not seem in favor of the legislation as it currently is written.

"...It seems the San Francisco Police Department has been at war with nightlife in the city. In the most famous case, the cops tried to shut down 1015 Folsom, a large and popular club, on the basis of a string of criminal complaints that were either bogus or had little to do with the operations of the club. That led Sup. Mark Leno to push for the creation of the Entertainment Commission, which will take over the authority for regulating club permits next year."

Burning Man artists battle urban constraints to keep spirit alive.
"Between increased police scrutiny, more sound-sensitive neighbors and the difficulty of finding a place cavernous enough to exhibit say, a 40-foot Spanish galleon, fire artists, a forest of 12-foot sculptures and a band or two, many Burners are frustrated at not being able to fully express themselves in their hometown."

AB 1941 could have a devastating impact on Late Night Culture throughout the state by holding promoters liable for any drug use or related harms experienced by patrons at electronic dance events.
California Anti-Rave Bill (AB1941) fails passage in Senate committee
On August 6th, Assembly Bill 1941 failed passage in the State Senate Public Safety Committee. This was AB1941's second committee failure, so hopefully that will kill this misguided proposal which would create civil liability for even responsible event promoters.

A party? Not just a party, a benefit. It's not your average benefit, but then, the San Francisco Late Night Coalition isn't your average activist movement, either. A year and a half old and 1,600 members strong, the group has a single objective.
